With a high-flow diesel catalytic converter:
The high flow catalytic converter doesnt have a significant impact on the exhaust sound.
With a muffler fitted:
The muffler option reduces overall volume and cabin resonance, making it a popular choice for customers who spend significant time touring, towing or driving long distances. The V8 character remains, but with a more controlled and comfortable exhaust note.
Our Thoughts:
For those wanting a lumpy V8 note typically choose the straight-through configuration without a muffler [note that some mechanics don't fancy the no cat & no muffler design configuration], while those after a more moderate sound often select the muffler option.

Frequently Asked Questions About VDJ79 Exhaust Systems
What is the difference between a DPF-back and turbo-back exhaust?
DPF is short for Diesel Particulate Filter which is an emission reduction device that was introduced to the 79 Series V8 in late 2016 [along with many other Diesel vehicles]
DPF Back Exhaust Systems are designed to bolt to the back of the DPF Flange and not interfere with the emission management or the ECU controls of the Filter. This is particularly important for owners who do not want to do any exhaust upgrade that will impede their new car warranty.
A Turbo Back system is basically as it sounds - the exhaust system is designed to bolt to the factory turbo flange and includes components from the turbo back.
What is the difference between a 3" and 4" exhaust?
A 3” exhaust is 76mm in diameter and a 4” exhaust is 101mm in diameter. The size refers to the diameter of the exhaust pipework. Whilst some sections of the exhaust pipework may be less than the mentioned size [such as off the turbo or off the DPF flange] they will step up to the mentioned exhaust pipe for the bulk of the exhaust system.
Does a twin tailpipe exhaust sound different?
The twin tailpipe exhaust sound is quite unique. It’s due to a few factors including the uniform sound output to the left and right of the vehicle rather than just the single tailpipe on the passengers side. In addition, as the exhaust flows from single into a Y Pipe and branches out to left and right tailpipes it creates a deeper distribution of tone which is widely cherished on the V8 Cruisers.
What is a side exit exhaust?
A side exit exhaust or shorty exit exhaust is an exhaust design that terminates to the side of the vehicle instead of the rear of the vehicle. The 79 Series is particularly favourable or accommodative of the 4” side exit exhaust designs as they have good ground clearance and the chassis layout and mounting brackets can easily be accommodated without any modifications to the vehicle.
Can a VDJ79 exhaust improve turbo response?
Absolutely. The factory VDJ79 (4.5L twin-turbo V8 diesel) exhaust is relatively restrictive and has smaller pipework so a Rhino Exhaust upgrade reduces backpressure, allowing the turbochargers to expel exhaust gases more easily
Why do some exhausts include a high-flow catalytic converter?
High flow catalytic converters are offered as an option on some Rhino Exhaust systems if they are turbo back designs. The Cat Converter a on Diesel V8 converts carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) and helps reduce diesel smell and smoke.
Does a muffler reduce performance?
The Mufflers used by Rhino Exhaust production teams don’t reduce performance as they are straight through megaflow design mufflers.
Why do Single Cab and Dual Cab VDJ79 models use different exhaust layouts?
The pre-DPF models of the 79 Series which were produced from 2007 through to 08/2016 have a different exhaust design for the Single Cab and Dual Cab .
The Single Cab exhaust comes off the turbo and then wraps around the outside of the chassis under the passenger door and then loops back over the chassis and comes out to exit near the passengers side towbar position. The Dual Cab exhaust however comes off the turbo and goes straight down the centre of the vehicle up over the chassis rail and exits in the same position as the Single Cab tailpipe.
This design changed when Toyota had to include the Diesel Particulate Filter exhaust emission technology in late 2016 and the exhaust system became uniform for the V8 Single Cab and Dual Cab vehicles.
